Hi I’m Raelene, I’m just returning to work after 16 years out of the workforce and thrilled to be working as the Peer Mentor Coordinator at CDAH. I love the power of sharing lived experience and connecting people with people.
My husband and I both live with lifelong disability. I have a combination of diagnosis of which not all are visible or obvious. This means I deal constantly with a lot of misunderstanding, judgement and presumption in all areas of my life.
I am a mum to four amazing children with a wide variety of abilities and interests. I am committed to building a world where everyone belongs and teaching my children about inclusion and accessibility is my starting place to build a legacy for the generations to come.
Being a parent with a disability was extra challenging prior to NDIS as my husband and I we were unable to access disability services if our children were with us and our workers were not allowed to drive the vehicle we purchased to transport us. Even basic everyday things like shopping and making doctor appointments required high level creativity and logistical planning.
Self Managing my NDIS funding has opened up a whole new world of possibilities for me to explore and learn how to become like any other ordinary mum in my town.
Over the years I’ve walked with many people with and without disability through the stuff of life. My life has been all about fluctuation so I’ve learnt to be determined and to think outside the box to get the life I love.
In my mentoring I want to offer my skills in:
Parenting with a disability and balancing work and family
Self-managing your NDIS Plan and getting through the review process
How to make the most of your NDIS Plan living in a rural area – what it takes to break through the isolation and connect with the resources and supports you need
Managing transitions – I can work with you through the logistics of change – I can walk beside you calmly to look for all the available avenues and help you to develop action plans if you need them.
I’m committed to being a life-long learner - I believe everyone has something to teach me and that everyone has something to offer!
I’m looking forward to connecting with you and helping you make the next step of change you’d like to make towards the life you want.
