About Hunter Deafblind Hub
Hunter Deafblind Hub meets on every fortnight (every second week) on a Friday from 10am – 1pm. Locations can change, but are usually held at our office at 202 King St, Newcastle 2300.
The Hunter Deafblind Hub is a community-led space where Deafblind people come together to connect, learn, and lead.
Built on the principles of human rights, mutual learning, and peer support, the Hub is more than just a meeting place, it’s a thriving community built by Deafblind people, for Deafblind people.
Through the Hub, we’ve created a welcoming space for Deafblind people and those committed to supporting their full inclusion. For many, this is the first time they’ve had the chance to meet others, share experiences, and be part of a local Deafblind community.
We aim to create a space where isolation turns into connection, where friendships, skills, and confidence grow.

Deafblind Hub Members
On the right is a video featuring Hunter Deafblind Hub members speaking about their lived experience of being a Deafblind person.
In the video, they answer a few frequently asked questions that they’ve gotten over the years, how they navigate day-to-day life and the challenges they face in a world without sight or hearing.
This video features Deafblind peers Jex Truran-Lakaev, the late Peter Risby and Stephen Hallinan.
Building a Community
At the Hunter Deafblind Hub, everyone is valued, both as learners and as teachers. Deafblind peers, interpreters, support workers, families, and allies come together to share knowledge, build confidence, and strengthen communication in an inclusive and supportive environment.
Recognising that Deafblind people communicate in many different ways, the Hub offers opportunities to learn tactile signing, braille, Auslan, and other communication methods.
It’s a safe and welcoming space where people can connect, share stories, and feel truly understood. For many, it’s the only place where they feel they can communicate freely and build lasting friendships.
The Hunter Deafblind Hub plays an active role in raising awareness and driving social change. Through workshops, community projects, and participation in events such as Deafblind Awareness Week, members work alongside families and professionals to challenge misconceptions and promote full inclusion.
Together, we are creating a community where Deafblind people are recognised as equal citizens, strong leaders, active contributors, and valued members of society.
